The Daily Telegraph has published the results of a student poll, conducted by Olympus, that showed that students priorities are not getting a good degree but going on fancy dress pub crawls and falling asleep in lectures.
The list headed ‘Things to do before leaving University’ includes many typical student experiences like getting into arguments with housemates over buying toilet rolls; ringing parents when money is needed; collecting 500 friends on Facebook and spending no more than £10 on a night out. Clearly student priorities are not focussed on their studies or getting a good degree.
I could have added a whole list of additional experiences based on my own days as a student. These included going to accident and emergency with a broken nose after diving into a half full swimming pool, working on Saturdays in a sex shop, sleeping in buses at the bus station and trying to steal fork lift trucks from the docks.
These are all typical student experiences. But student life can be fraught with risk. Many students don’t have an entirely positive experience at University or college. Often they are in unfamiliar towns and cities, away from home for the first time where they might find themselves prey to unscrupulous landlords only too happy to take their limited cash.
Students in some of Britains cities have become targets for bullying, abuse and theft. All students, these days, have loads of expensive gadgets like laptops, mobile phones and mp3 players and these are attractive to local criminal gangs. These days students would be wise to take courses in self defence and confrontation avoidance.
Enjoying life, making friends and developing independence are all part of what it is to be a student. But the important thing is to stay safe.
